Keeping night shift workers healthy

Anti-fatigue mats can add comfort in long shifts.

Shift work remains common employment for many in the country. It means long hours on your feet and frequently running around. While anti-fatigue mats can help, because they provide a cushion that helps ease pressure on the joints, they’re not the only adjustment that should be made to make working a night shift more tolerable.

Safety and Health Magazine reports there are some concerns with the night shift and how it affects overall employee health. The news provider states that a recent study found employees who normally work the night shift are 29 percent more likely to struggle with weight issues such as obesity. Additionally, shift workers were found to be more fatigued, which could lead to even more problems, as 13 percent of total workplace injuries were related to being tired on the job.

It’s important for management to make special accomodations for night shift workers to ensure they stay healthy. According to the Small Business Chronicle, it’s critical to have enough staff on hand so everyone can take breaks and get some rest throughout their shifts. Keep the onboarding process in mind as well. The news provider reports that a new schedule to the night shift can take some adjustment, so have more staff on to cover the new people as they get acclimated to their new routine.
