Falling down the stairs can bring a multitude of injuries, leaving employees out of work for an undetermined amount of time while they heal. However, there are some injuries that may not immediately come to mind when thinking about falls.

According to Safety + Health, falls are the top cause of eye injuries that require hospitalization, resulting in more than 8,425 visits to the hospital. While this statistic encompasses all falls in general, falling down the stairs resulted in more than 900 eye injuries.

Building managers will want to ensure all the proper precautions are taken to prevent falls. The news provider reports that the cost of treatment for an eye injury related to a fall was more than $20,000, and the cost has increased by 62 percent between 2002 and 2011.

There are general guidelines managers should provide to all employees about stair safety to ensure that as many injuries are prevented as possible. According to Health Stream, elevators should be used when trying to move loads to different floors. As the news provider points out, carrying loads up the stairs prevents people from being able to hold onto the hand rails and can block one’s line of vision, increasing the chances of a fall.
